Offshore wind farms could power all British homes

The UK government projects that offshore wind power could be contributing up to 33 Gigawatts (GW) of installed generating capacity by 2020, enough to meet the electricity demand of every home in the country.
The United Kingdom’s windswept coastline makes it the ideal location for exploiting the vast quantities of energy available offshore. Winds blow stronger and more consistently out at sea, producing up to 25% more energy than on land.

On 15 June, tens of thousands of people from around the world joined in celebrating the enormous benefits of wind power during the first ever Global Wind Day. "Wind energy is a driving force for climate protection, economic development and the creation of future-proof jobs”, said German Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel. “The Global Wind Day 2009 demonstrates the enormous potential of wind energy to the public.”
